The Detective Division of the Southampton Village Police Department furnishes specialized assistance to the Patrol Force regarding criminal investigations. These cooperative efforts aim to create a community sense of well-being throughout the Village. Through intelligent and efficient investigative methods the Detective Division prepares cases for court in order to prosecute the guilty, ever mindful of the legal and moral responsibility to protect the innocent.
The protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, the enforcement of laws, and preservation of peace cannot always be accomplished by law enforcement presence alone. In depth follow up investigation is required when certain circumstances are present.
The investigator's role is to establish that an illegal act has occurred and to gather evidence to prove the identity and responsibility of the offender. The entrance of the investigator into a matter is normally initiated when the routine patrol functions do not or cannot accomplish these ends.
